Mistake #1: Connecting an Unbalanced Source to a Balanced Input Without an Adapter
If you connect an electric guitar or a device with a mono (unbalanced) Jack output directly to an XLR input on the console without a DI Box, you risk introducing background noise and interference. The solution is to use aDI Box (Direct Injection)to convert the unbalanced signal into a balanced signal compatible with your console.
Mistake #2: Confusing Mono and Stereo Cables
A mono Jack cable (2 conductors: ground + signal) and a stereo or balanced Jack cable (3 conductors: ground + signal + return) are not interchangeable in all contexts. Using a mono cable on a balanced input of the console will yield poor results. Always check if your application requires a mono TS or balanced TRS cable.
Mistake #3: Cables That Are Too Long and Poorly Organized
Cables lying on the ground, randomly coiled, are a source of problems: risk of ground loops, accelerated mechanical deterioration, and degraded signal. Get into the habit of coiling your cables using the"over-under"(also called technician method) to preserve their lifespan and avoid internal knots.
Error #4: Mixing line and mic levels
A console has mic inputs (approximately -60 dBu) and line inputs (approximately +4 dBu). Connecting a line source (keyboard, CD player, audio interface) to a mic input without adjusting the gain or using the appropriate line input will saturate the signal and produce unpleasant distortion. Always check the type of input used.
Error #5: Neglecting cable quality
A poor quality cable with insufficient shielding will be the primary source of problems in any audio setup. Poorly soldered connections, cables that are too thin, or cheap connectors cause crackling, sound dropouts, and failures during performance.
